Third Generation Computers: 1965-1971
Characteristics:
-Third Generation Computers used integrated circuits instead of vacuum tubes and transistors.
-They were also a lot more affordable, because of the integrated circuits.
-In this generation, the Digital Equipment Corporation introduced the first commercially successful minicomputer.
-They were more small, lighter, and more power efficient.
-The computers could run multiple programs for multiple users at the same time.
-They had a magnetic core and solid states as main storage.

-The Invention of the integrated circuit had changed the course of computers. Jack Kilby had invented the circuit. Although the first integrated circuit was produced in 1953, but didn't appear until 1963.
-The IBM 360 was first introduced by IBM in 1965, they had first used transistors but then they had made a transition from transistors to integrated circuits.
-The PDP-8, it was one of the first minicomputers to sell in the market. It had sold for $20,000. Five years after that, the price had reduced to only $5,000. It only had 4,096 words of memory, but it had a reasonable cost, speed, and a small size for a computer at that time. (On the left)

Jack Kilby
Born on November 8, 1923 in Jefferson City, Missouri.
Died on June 20, 2005 in Dallas Texas.
He studied at the University of Illinois.
He had created the integrated circuit which was a big accomplishment in the third generation. He had also won the Nobel Peace Prize in Physics.
